What Happens During A Chimney Cleaning & Sweeping
Did you know that as little as 1/8 inch of creosote buildup can pose a serious hazard for you and your family? In addition to decreasing the efficiency of your stove, creosote buildup presents a fire hazard, which can ignite during a hot fire under the right circumstances. These chimney fires can crack and destroy liners, tiles, and connectors. They can also spread beyond the chimney into the structure of your home, threatening your safety. This is one reason it is crucial to have your chimney cleaned and inspected before each heating season, especially if your stove is used as a source of heat.
Animals are another reason to keep up with annual inspections and chimney sweepings. Birds, squirrels, raccoons, and other animals may have decided to nest in your chimney since you last used it. Not only do animals bring flammable fur, feathers, nesting materials, bugs, and feces in with them, but they create a blockage in the flue or get stuck in the chimney and die. An annual inspection and cleaning of your chimney system will help ensure that no animals are making their way into your chimney, and that if they have, everything is removed for your safety and the safety of your chimney system.
What Happens During A Chimney Sweeping Appointment?
During a typical pre-season chimney sweeping and inspection, your Black Moose chimney sweep will:
- Use drop cloths and air filtration to keep everything clean
- Clean your flue from top to bottom (For masonry-lined flues, we will video scan your flue after cleaning)
- Remove and inspect your stove pipe connector
- Clean, service, and check over your stove or insert
- Take multiple digital pictures to ensure everything is well documented
- Provide you with a report at the end on the condition of your chimney
If we find any damage or areas of concern during our sweeping, we will alert you and make recommendations for repairs and restoration. Your safety is our number one concern, and we never cut corners or make assumptions about the condition of your chimney and fireplace.
